The Castle of Sceaux, lined up in the magnificent cone-shaped bushes of its splendid French garden.

This light and dreamy place made me think about a poem by symbolist poet Konstantin Balmont, who was born in Russia and died in poverty and exile in a Parisian suburb in 1942. It's called "The Goldfish". There is no English translation available online, so here goes my own try (not to be judged too severely):

The Goldfish
A merry ball was in the castle,
   The musicians sung,
In the garden a light breeze
   Lightly the swings swung.

In the castle, in a delirious delight,
   The violin sung, sung,
While in the garden in the lake
   Was a tiny golden fish.

And spun under the moon,
   As if though carved,
Many many night moths,
   Dizzy with the spring.

The lake swung the star,
   The willows bent so low,
While glimmered in the lake,
   A tiny golden fish.

Even tough she was not seen,
   By musicians of the ball,
But from the tiny golden fish,
   Music could be heard.

Just as silence makes it through,
   Tiny goldfish flickers,
Flickers, and resurge
   Smiles again between the guests.

Violin will play again,
   And a song is heard.
And love is purling in the hearts,
   And the spring is laughing.

Whisper eyes to eyes: "I'm waiting!"
   So lightly and unsure,

This photo - or rather, image - came a long way in the lightroom from the original negative to become something mid-way between a collage and a pop art mockery.

Pictured is the copy of the statue of liberty standing in Paris, near the bridge "Pont de Grenelle", on the tip of the romantic "Path of Swans" (allée des Cygnes). A must see.

Jumièges is situated on the north bank of the Seine, between Duclair and Caudebec, in Normandy.

The abbey was founded in 654 and at some point numbered nearly a thousand monks. In the ninth century it was pillaged and burnt to the ground by the Normans. A new church was consecrated in 1067 in the presence of William the Conqueror.

Witnesses of this former glory, the ruins, still dominate the local countryside...

Taking place only several times a year, the "Grandes Eaux Nocturnes" is an exceptional evening organised in the park of Versailles. During the evening the gardens are filled with classic music, the fountains gleam in coloured lightning. The culmination is reached with some fantastic fireworks taking the immense gardens as their background! This is definitely THE moment to visit Versailles.

An old train on the busiest railway station in Paris - Saint Lazare. Remember the impressionist painter Claude Monet who, back in 1877, was standing on the platform of this station painting the light as it was gleaming through the steam of the trains hissing under the glass roof of the new rail station. Obsessed with colours as he was, he asked the head of St Lazare to retard a train by 25 minutes in order to capture the colours. Here you can see the result here

This image of night Istanbul was taken from a pedestrian bridge leading to the quayside. This bridge is a nice spot to observe some spectacular traffic jams. I especially like the way the standing policemen contrast with the moving trafic. Though I wish there were some more cars on the right side.

One of the biggest and most famous parisian fashion shops - Le Printemps - decorated for Christmas 2007. I took this picture while going home, and now, as the spring is here to stay, I have found it again. I think the Printemps did a very good job in decorating themselves this year, and outperformed their eternal competitor - Les Galeries Lafayette (which did a superb job as well!).

This is the first time I post a double photo, because I thought the BW version is much better, but it would be inexcusable not to show you the real colours of the illumination! Also imagine that this was all accompanied by music, with stars blinking together with jingle bells - magic! Hagia Irene, Istanbul

The church of Hagia Irene/Hagia Eirene, imposing by its sobriety and stance, is one of the few Byzantine churches which have not been converted to a mosque after the conquest of Constantinople. It was first commissioned in the IV century and restored in 548. The ottomans used it as a warehouse for some time, as it is situated in the first yard of the Topkapi palace. Unfortunately it is not open for visits, unless it's used as a concert venue. It is a mind-boggling witness of history... just imagine that it was already a thousand years old when the turks conquered Constantinopole!

A magic ceiling

This is the ceiling in one of the rooms of the Harem in the Dolmabahce (Dolmabahçe) palace in Istanbul, Turkey. Built in 1865, it replaced the Topkapi palace (see this photo) as the Sultan's official residency. The Dolmabahce palace looks very much like a European palace, although its interior planning follows turkish traditions. By the way, I've found this palace to be much more richly decorated than, say, the Le Palais de l'Elysée - French president's official residency in Paris. I took many pictures inside Dolmabahce, and I might be posting them later - tell me if you're interested!

Silver TGV

This is a shiny and silver copy of the french high-speed TGV train. It was put on a pedestal in front of the Grand Palais in December 2007, when the palace was hosting the "L'Art entre en gare" (Art goes into railway) exposition.

I love the TGVs! The very first photo posted on EUGRES was that of a TGV :)

This image of boys playing football was accidentally taken at the Place Royal in Paris. It was on a very warm Sunday, when all people went outdoors to read a book, chat with friends or simply enjoy the sun on the quays of Seine.

I think the photo could have had a better crop, but you cannot relive the same moment twice!
